Siracusa, ancient Syracuse, was once the greatest city of the Greek world and today combines world-class ruins with one of Sicily's most beautiful old towns. On the island of Ortigia, honey-coloured baroque palaces surround Piazza del Duomo, where the cathedral is built into a Greek temple, and lanes lead to the Fountain of Arethusa and the seafront.
On the mainland, the Neapolis Archaeological Park holds a vast Greek theatre, a Roman amphitheatre and the Ear of Dionysius cave. Baroque Noto is an easy day trip.
