Where is the Amber Cove cruise port?

Ships dock at Amber Cove's two-berth pier, about 12 km (15–20 minutes) by road west of central Puerto Plata. You walk from the ship into the gated cruise centre, with shops, restaurants, a pool and the taxi and tour pick-up area.

Free bicycle taxis run between the ship and the port buildings (tip customary). The town isn't walkable from the port, so take a fixed-fare taxi.

Puerto Plata's other cruise port, Taino Bay, is a separate facility in the city.

About Amber Cove

Amber Cove is a purpose-built cruise port on the Bay of Maimon, on the Dominican Republic's Atlantic north coast, about 12 km west of Puerto Plata.

Its pools, waterslides, zipline, cabanas, restaurants and shops let many passengers spend the whole call on site. Puerto Plata has the 16th-century Fortaleza San Felipe, Victorian-era houses around its central park, Umbrella Street and a cable car up Mount Isabel de Torres, and the Damajagua waterfalls lie inland.

Amber and larimar, the region's gemstones, are sold at the port.

The 16th-century fort at the end of the Malecon has a museum and views over the bay. It pairs well with a walk past Victorian houses around Parque Central and along the colourful Umbrella Street.

The cable car rises to the summit of Mount Isabel de Torres, which has a Christ statue, gardens and views over Puerto Plata. The base is about 15 minutes from the port by taxi; adult foreign visitors pay USD 10. Clouds often cover the summit later in the day.

Guided river hikes inland include jumps and slides down a chain of natural rock pools and cascades. The site is about 30–35 minutes from Amber Cove, so most passengers go on an excursion.
