About Longyearbyen
Longyearbyen, on Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago, is one of the world's northernmost towns, about 1,300 km from the North Pole. The former coal-mining settlement has the Svalbard Museum and Svalbard Church, and is the gateway to glaciers, fjords and Arctic wildlife; polar bears roam outside town, so guided tours are needed beyond the settlement.
