Argostoli is the capital of Kefalonia, the largest of Greece's Ionian Islands, on a sheltered bay on the island's southwest coast that opens into the Koutavos Lagoon. Rebuilt after the 1953 earthquake, the town has a palm-lined waterfront, the busy Vallianou Square and the pedestrian Lithostroto shopping street, and loggerhead turtles are often seen near the harbour. The long stone De Bosset Bridge crosses the lagoon.
Beyond town, Kefalonia is known for Melissani Cave's sunlit underground lake, Drogarati Cave, and Myrtos Beach below white cliffs, made famous by the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Cruise ships dock at the Bastouni jetty on the town's waterfront, or tender when a second ship calls.

White-pebble beach in a bay of sheer cliffs on the northwest coast, often called the most beautiful in Greece.
