St. Croix is one of the three main U.S. Virgin Islands, and cruise ships call at Frederiksted, a small town on its west end. Frederiksted has walkable streets of historic architecture, a restored waterfront park and beaches close to the pier, and the island feels less developed than St. Thomas. The red, Danish-built Fort Frederik has guarded the harbour; outside its walls thousands of enslaved people gathered to demand their freedom. On the north-east coast, Christiansted has a historic district around Fort Christiansvaern and is the departure point for boats to Buck Island Reef National Monument, known for its underwater snorkel trail and elkhorn coral. Rum distilleries, Rainbow Beach and restaurants serving local specialties fill out a day ashore.

Red Danish fort and museum on Strand Street, a 4-minute walk from the pier, with exhibits on Virgin Islands history including emancipation; about USD 5, under-16s free with an adult, open when ships are in port.

Calm west-end beach 2 km north of the pier, about 5 minutes by taxi or a 25-minute walk, for an easy beach stop.

The island's historic Danish town, about 35 minutes by road, with the boardwalk and Fort Christiansvaern in Christiansted National Historic Site (about USD 10 per person 16+).

Snorkel the underwater trail over elkhorn coral reefs on a boat trip from Christiansted; half-day trips from about USD 95 per adult, so allow for the drive across the island.
