Sarande is a resort town on Albania's southern Ionian coast, facing the Greek island of Corfu across a narrow strait. Smaller cruise ships berth at the cruise quay on the waterfront, while larger ones anchor in the bay and tender passengers ashore, where Albanian passport checks apply. The promenade starts just outside the port, with the ruins of an ancient synagogue in the centre and Lekuresi Castle on the hill above. Most visitors head south to Butrint, a UNESCO-listed archaeological site, passing the beaches and islets of Ksamil.
