Volos lies in the middle of Greece, on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of Mount Pelion, and has been a significant port throughout its history. The city is closely linked with the Argonauts of Greek mythology and today combines stately mansions, museums and old neighbourhoods with a long seafront promenade and squares full of tsipouro tavernas. Cruise ships berth at a pier of the Port of Volos, a short walk from the centre. In a day ashore, visitors can stroll the promenade, see Neolithic finds at the Athanasakeio Archaeological Museum, ride up to the village of Makrinitsa for the view from the balcony of Pelion, or make the longer trip to the monasteries of Meteora.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site where monks settled on almost inaccessible sandstone peaks from the 11th century; 24 monasteries had been built by the end of the 15th century, and several monasteries are open to visitors, among them Great Meteoron and Varlaam. The peaks rise more than 400 m, and the churches hold important 16th-century frescoes. Men may not enter in shorts or sleeveless shirts, and women may not wear trousers or sleeveless tops.

A protected traditional village built almost vertically on the slope of Pelion above Volos, often called "the balcony of Pelion" for the view over the city and the Pagasetic Gulf. Its paved central square, at about 630 m, is shaded by tall, centuries-old plane trees and has an old fountain with bronze lion heads and the church of St John the Baptist; it once served as the village market. The village is open to walk around freely.

Museum at 1 Athanasaki Street with Neolithic finds from Thessaly, halls that recreate ancient graves and temporary exhibitions of recent excavation finds. Tickets are EUR 10, reduced EUR 5. A lift and accessible toilets are available.

Volos has a long promenade by the sea along Argonafton Street, lined with cafes and restaurants and close to the cruise pier. The city is known for its tsipouro tavernas serving meze and fresh seafood, and it is closely linked with the myth of the Argonauts.
