Tauranga is the largest city in New Zealand's Bay of Plenty, on the North Island's east coast, and the Port of Tauranga at Mount Maunganui is the country's largest port. Cruise ships berth at Mount Maunganui, the beach suburb at the harbour entrance, beneath Mauao, an extinct volcanic cone. Its walking tracks have been closed since a January 2026 weather event. The long surf beach, cafes and the Mount Hot Pools at the foot of Mauao are all within walking distance of the wharf.
The city centre lies across the harbour bridge. Inland, Rotorua is known for geysers, boiling mud and Maori culture, and the Hobbiton Movie Set near Matamata is another popular trip. The 2026–27 season runs from October to April with 79 ship calls.
