Portoferraio is the main town of Elba, the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago, and is famous as the place of Napoleon's exile in 1814–15. The harbour curves beneath ochre houses and the 16th-century Medici fortifications, with Forte Stella and Forte Falcone looking over the bay.
Stepped lanes climb to the Palazzina dei Mulini, Napoleon's town residence, while his summer home, Villa San Martino, lies inland. White-pebble beaches such as Le Ghiaie are close to town, and the island's green hills and coves invite exploring.
