Nafplio, on the Argolic Gulf in the Peloponnese, was the first capital of modern Greece and is one of the country's prettiest towns. Venetian mansions, bougainvillea-draped lanes and the marble Syntagma Square fill the Old Town, beneath the cliff-top Palamidi fortress and its famous long stairway.
The tiny island castle of Bourtzi guards the harbor, and the Akronafplia walls offer sea views. Nafplio is also the gateway to two UNESCO sites: Bronze Age Mycenae and the ancient theatre of Epidaurus.
