Montevideo, Uruguay's capital, sits on the Rio de la Plata, and cruise ships dock in its working commercial port right beside Ciudad Vieja, the colonial old town. About 100 cruise calls were scheduled for the October–March 2025/26 season, and Costa has used the port for passenger turnarounds. From the port gate, the Mercado del Puerto, with its parrilla grills, is a short walk.
The pedestrian Peatonal Sarandi then leads through the old town to Plaza Independencia, home to the Artigas monument, the Palacio Salvo and the Teatro Solis. Beyond the centre, a rambla of almost 30 km runs past city beaches such as Pocitos. Carrasco International Airport is about 22 km east.

The square links Ciudad Vieja with the newer city and starts Avenida 18 de Julio. The Jose Artigas monument stands at its centre above his mausoleum, and it is ringed by the Palacio Salvo, the Puerta de la Ciudadela and the Teatro Solis.

Opened in 1856 with Verdi's Ernani and reopened in 2004 after renovation, it is one of South America's main theatres. Guided tours run Wednesday to Sunday in Spanish, Portuguese and English, and are free on Wednesdays.

Ciudad Vieja market hall open for more than a century and a classic stop for visitors, known above all for parrillada grills, with fish, seafood, empanadas, Uruguayan craft beer and souvenirs.

A waterfront rambla of almost 30 km runs along the Rio de la Plata past white-sand city beaches such as Ramirez, Pocitos, Buceo and Carrasco, most with ISO 14001 certification and lifeguards.
