Genoa (Genova) is the capital of Liguria and a former maritime republic, squeezed between the Ligurian Sea and steep Apennine hills.
Its medieval centre is one of Europe's largest, a maze of lanes (caruggi) leading to the striped Cathedral of San Lorenzo and Piazza De Ferrari. Via Garibaldi and its Palazzi dei Rolli are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Porto Antico waterfront holds the Aquarium, the Galata Maritime Museum and the Bigo lift.
The home of pesto and focaccia, Genoa is a major Mediterranean cruise homeport and port of call, with Boccadasse and the Riviera towns close by.
