About Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach is a small resort town on Queensland's tropical coast and the mainland gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. Day tours leave its marinas for the islands, the outer reef and Whitehaven Beach, whose white silica sand and the swirling tides of Hill Inlet are the region's best-known sights. In town, the free, stinger-safe lagoon sits on the foreshore, Boathaven Beach is next to the Port of Airlie marina, and the rainforest hills of Conway National Park rise behind the town. Cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers ashore.

Things to Do in Airlie Beach

Airlie Beach Lagoon

Free, lifeguarded swimming lagoon on a raised breakwater in the centre of town, stinger-safe all year, with a toddler pool, a children's pool, a lap pool, lawns, barbecues and toilets.

Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet

The seven-kilometre white silica beach on Whitsunday Island, in Whitsunday Islands National Park about 25 km east of Airlie Beach, reached by day cruise, sailing trip or scenic flight from the marinas. Tours landing at Tongue Bay add the 1.4 km return Hill Inlet Lookout track; stingers are common for much of the year.

Boathaven Beach

Free all-tide swimming beach next to the Port of Airlie marina, a short walk from the main street, with views of the Coral Sea and the islands.

Conway National Park

Rainforest-clad hills rising behind Airlie Beach, with secluded beaches and lookouts over the Whitsundays. The Honeyeater Lookout walk is a challenging out-and-back climb from Kara Crescent in Airlie Beach, taking about 2.5-3 hours. Check Queensland Parks for trail closures before you go.
