Savona is the main city of the western Italian Riviera, about 40 km west of Genoa between the Ligurian Sea and the Ligurian Alps.
It is best known to cruisers as Costa Crociere's home base. The compact centre sits right behind the port, with the 16th-century Priamar fortress on its seafront hill, the medieval Torretta at the old harbour and the Cappella Sistina beside the cathedral.
Most passengers arrive via Genoa airport or by train, and Riviera villages such as Noli are a short drive away.

This 16th-century Genoese fortress stands on the hill above the port, about 15 minutes' walk from the terminal. Giuseppe Mazzini was once imprisoned here, and it now houses the Priamar museum centre and offers sea views.

The 14th-century Leon Pancaldo tower, known as the Torretta, is Savona's symbol. It stands at the old harbour right beside the cruise terminal, surrounded by cafes and the seafront promenade.

Pope Sixtus IV built the Cappella Sistina in 1480–1483 as a mausoleum for his parents. It was later redecorated in Rococo style and stands next to the Cathedral of the Assumption in the old centre, a short walk from the port.

Noli is a small seaside town on the Riviera about 19 km south-west of the port, around 30 minutes by car. It also has a station (Spotorno-Noli) on the coastal railway, which makes it an easy half-day trip.
