Santa Margherita Ligure is a resort town on the Gulf of Tigullio on the Ligurian Riviera, east of Genoa. It has no cruise pier, so ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to the town harbour, close to the promenade and the ferry landing. Tenders can be cancelled in rough seas.
From the harbour, ferries run along the coast to Portofino and the abbey of San Fruttuoso, and a local bus links the town with Portofino. The town is easy to explore on foot, with Villa Durazzo and its gardens above the harbour and a 16th-century Genoese castle on the waterfront.
