About Hilo

Hilo is the largest town on Hawaiʻi Island, the Big Island, on the wet windward east coast around Hilo Bay. It is an old-fashioned harbour town with a downtown of early-20th-century storefronts, a busy farmers market and a strong Japanese-Hawaiian heritage, seen in the Liliʻuokalani Gardens on the bay. The town gets plenty of rain, which feeds lush gardens and waterfalls such as Rainbow Falls on the Wailuku River.

Hilo is the closest port to Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, about 30 miles uphill, where visitors can see the Kilauea caldera, steam vents and lava tubes. Cruise ships dock at Hilo Harbor on Kuhio Bay, mostly on Hawaiian island itineraries.
