Where is the Freeport cruise port?

Ships dock alongside at the cruise berths in Freeport Harbour, the island's deepwater industrial port on the southwest coast. The harbour is about 10 km west of downtown Freeport and 16 km by road from Port Lucaya, next to the BORCO oil terminal, the container port and the Grand Bahama Shipyard. No tendering is needed, and the harbour has quays for up to three cruise ships. Past immigration, a small harbour village has souvenir shops, a straw market, bars and car-rental desks, and taxis queue at the exit.

The surrounding area is industrial and not walkable, so nearly every visit needs a taxi or excursion. In January 2026 MSC Cruises and the government announced a new multi-user cruise pier complex at Billy Cay in the harbour. No opening date is set and the current terminal remains in use. Carnival ships calling at Celebration Key use a separate pier farther east.

Driving to the port

Taxis are government-regulated. Fares are $3 for the first quarter-mile plus $0.40 per mile and $3 per extra passenger. In practice they are rarely metered, so agree the price first. Freeport Taxi Company and the Grand Bahama Taxi Union serve the port. Uber and Lyft do not operate. The jitney bus costs $1.50 but stops outside the port and has no fixed schedule. Traffic drives on the left. US dollars are accepted everywhere.

About Freeport

Freeport is the main city of Grand Bahama, about 100 km (60 miles) southeast of Florida. It was developed as a planned industrial and tourism free-trade zone, so the cruise harbour sits in a working deepwater port beside an oil terminal, container port and shipyard, well away from the resort area. Most visitors head east to Lucaya, where Port Lucaya Marketplace, the marina and Count Basie Square gather shops, conch stands and live music.

Wide, quiet beaches such as Taino, Xanadu and Fortune line the south coast. Farther east, Lucayan National Park protects one of the world's longest charted underwater cave systems, mangrove creeks and Gold Rock Beach. Local food centres on conch salad, cracked conch and fresh seafood.

Climate
Subtropical: mild, dry winters around 21–25°C and hot, humid summers around 29–32°C. The rainy and hurricane season runs June–November and peaks in September.

Things to Do in Freeport

Port Lucaya Marketplace

An open-air complex of shops, straw vendors, restaurants and bars around Count Basie Square and the marina, about 20 minutes by taxi from the pier. The square has live music, and nearby public access points lead to Lucaya Beach.

Lucayan National Park and Gold Rock Beach

This Bahamas National Trust park, about 35 minutes east by road, protects one of the world's longest charted underwater cave systems. Stairs lead down to Ben's Cave and Burial Mound Cave, and a mangrove boardwalk leads to undeveloped Gold Rock Beach, best at low tide. Day pass $25.50 per adult.

Taino Beach

A broad stretch of pale sand with calm, clear water east of Lucaya, about 25 minutes from the pier. Chair and umbrella rentals, water sports and beachfront dining make it a good choice for a full beach day.
