Sami is a small port town on the east coast of Kefalonia, the largest of Greece's Ionian Islands, facing the channel towards Ithaca. Its harbour front is lined with cafes and tavernas, and the town is the island's main ferry port to the Greek mainland and Ithaca. Sami is the closest town to two of Kefalonia's best-known sights: Melissani Cave, an underground lake lit by sunlight through its collapsed roof and toured by rowing boat, and Drogarati Cave with its stalactites.
Over the hill lies Antisamos Beach, a white-pebble bay used in the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Small luxury ships anchor off Sami and tender passengers to the harbour.
