About Porto Torres

Porto Torres, on the Gulf of Asinara in north-west Sardinia, was the Roman colony of Turris Libisonis and keeps the remains of its baths and a Roman bridge. Its pride is the Basilica of San Gavino, one of Sardinia's largest Romanesque churches, with apses at both ends and a crypt of martyrs' relics.

The waterfront is marked by the Aragonese tower, and the coves of Balai are a short walk away. Beyond town lie the turquoise shallows of La Pelosa at Stintino, the wild Asinara National Park and Catalan-flavoured Alghero.
