Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda
Serving as the residence of the King, this riverside complex was laid out after King Norodom moved the capital from Oudong to Phnom Penh. Large parts of its grounds and gardens are open to visitors, including the golden-spired Throne Hall and the Silver Pagoda (Wat Preah Keo), whose floor is covered with more than 5,000 silver tiles and which houses the Emerald Buddha. Areas of royal living stay closed, and shoulders and knees must be covered.
National Museum of Cambodia
Next to the Royal Palace on Street 13, the national museum displays Khmer art. Guided tours in Khmer, English, French and Japanese can be arranged at the entrance; photography is not allowed in the galleries.
Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum
The memorial site of S-21, the Khmer Rouge interrogation and detention centre in the heart of the city, preserves a tragic period of Cambodia's history with the aim of making visitors messengers of peace. With Choeung Ek, it is part of the Cambodian Memorial Sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Choeung Ek Genocidal Center
The former execution site of the S-21 prison, now the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center, reveals the final stage of the Khmer Rouge system of imprisonment, interrogation, torture and execution. Preserved as a memorial since the regime fell, it honours the victims and, with Tuol Sleng, forms part of the Cambodian Memorial Sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List as places of memory and reflection.
