Lavrio (Lavrion) is a small harbour town at the south-eastern tip of Attica, about 36 km by road from Athens International Airport. Its port authority has turned the Passenger Station into a cruise terminal used mainly for homeporting small and medium ships. The town grew around the ancient silver and lead mines of Lavreotiki, and its museums and 19th-century industrial buildings reflect that history.
Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon lie about 11 km south, and the ancient theatre of Thorikos sits on a hill just north of town. Athens is about an hour away by road.

Doric temple of 444-440 BC on the cliffs at Attica's southern tip, built of local Agrileza marble; 15 of its 38 columns survive. Known for its sunsets.

Finds from Lavreotiki, Sounion and Thorikos from 5000 BC to the 6th century AD, including the frieze of the Temple of Poseidon.

On Velatouri Hill just outside Lavrio; built at the end of the 6th century BC, considered among the oldest theatres in Greece, with an unusual elliptical shape.

UNESCO-listed citadel of Athens, reachable by regional bus or taxi from Lavrio.
