In the early 20th century it was a worldwide industrial and commercial hub, and that era of prosperity left downtown landmarks such as the Art Deco Guardian Building. Today Detroit is a regular stop on Great Lakes cruises, with ships docking on the downtown riverfront. In a day ashore, visitors can see an art collection ranked among the top six in the nation at the Detroit Institute of Arts, step into the colourful lobby of the Guardian Building, browse the Saturday market at Eastern Market or walk part of the RiverWalk, which runs for just over four miles along the river.

One of the leading art museums in the United States, with a collection of more than 65,000 works ranked among the top six in the nation, including the Rivera Court. General admission is USD 20 for adults, USD 10 for seniors and college students and USD 8 for ages 6 to 17; residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties enter free.

Built as the 40-storey headquarters of the Union Trust Company, the Guardian Building is one of the most striking Art Deco skyscrapers in the world, once promoted as the "Cathedral of Finance". Its tangerine brick exterior and colourful lobby blend Native American, Aztec and Arts and Crafts influences. Entry is free, although the lobby and promenade may be closed at times for private events.

Detroit's historic market district at 2934 Russell Street comes alive on Saturdays, with a vast assortment of local produce, flowers and food stalls; smaller markets run on some weekdays.

The RiverWalk stretches just over four miles (about 6.5 km) along the Detroit River, linking riverfront parks such as Hart Plaza, Cullen Plaza and Robert C. Valade Park, with public restrooms in the parks.
