Things to Do in Cochin

Fort Kochi and the Chinese fishing nets

The heritage quarter grew around Fort Manuel, the first European fort in India, and mixes Portuguese, Dutch and British buildings, including St. Francis Church, the oldest European church in India. On the shore stand the huge cantilevered Chinese fishing nets of teak and bamboo, about 10 m high, best seen from Vasco da Gama Square when they are worked in the morning and early evening.

Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace)

Built by the Portuguese as a gift to the Kochi king Veera Kerala Varma, and called the Dutch Palace after later Dutch renovations. It holds Ramayana murals covering about 100 square metres and portraits of the Kochi kings.

Paradesi Synagogue

Built in Mattancherry, it is the oldest synagogue in the Commonwealth. Its clock tower has faces with Malayalam, Hebrew, Arabic and Roman numerals, and Jew Street nearby is lined with antique shops.

Backwater cruise

Backwater cruises through the scenic waterways of Kerala, including trips to Kumarakom, leave from near the port.
