Castaway Cay is Disney Cruise Line's private island in the northern Bahamas, a low, scrub-covered cay of about 1,000 acres near Great Abaco Island. Its former name was Gorda Cay. Disney leased it from the Bahamian government in 1997 and has developed only about 55 acres. Those acres hold shallow, breakwater-protected beaches and a snorkeling lagoon with sunken props, plus castaway-themed buildings and shops that take stateroom-key payment.
Before Disney, the cay was known for bonefishing, sunken-treasure stories and a bootleggers' airstrip, which is now a bike path. Scenes from Splash and Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed here. Visits are relaxed beach days: Castaway Family Beach with the Pelican Plunge water-slide platform, the adults-only Serenity Bay, bike and nature trails, and included barbecue lunches. Most Disney Bahamas and Caribbean sailings call here.
