About Barentsburg

Barentsburg is a Russian coal-mining town on the east side of Grønfjorden in Svalbard. Check on board for where you will go ashore. Named after the Dutch seafarer Barentsz, the settlement was heavily damaged during the Second World War and rebuilt afterwards, and its streets of Soviet-era buildings, the Lenin monument and the Pomor Museum draw visitors today. The museum, souvenir shop, chapel and hotel are the only buildings open to visitors without special permission.
