Bar Harbor is a small resort town on Mount Desert Island on the coast of Maine, facing Frenchman Bay and the Porcupine Islands. It is the gateway to Acadia National Park, which covers much of the island with pink granite peaks, lakes, carriage roads and a rocky shoreline; the Park Loop Road leads to Cadillac Mountain, Sand Beach and Jordan Pond. In town, the Shore Path follows the bay past Gilded Age summer cottages, and at low tide a sand bar leads out to Bar Island.
Main Street is lined with shops, ice-cream parlours and lobster restaurants. Cruise visits are strictly limited by the town, and most passengers come ashore by tender at the foot of downtown.
